In a complex and globalised world, risks and imbalances as well as opportunities will flourish. The current financial and economic crisis means that these will tend to increase rather than decrease in the coming years. Entrepreneurs have a critical role to play if global challenges such as the fight against poverty and climate change are to be met: They must act as cross-border institutions and build on the principles of freedom and democracy.
It is our view that the most sustainable improvements will be achieved not by donations alone, but by investment – in people, ideas and projects. After all, entrepreneurs are efficient, fast and, above all, global, and thus the most powerful weapon in the fight against global problems. With its allocation function, the financial industry can act as a significant catalyst for the necessary change.
